Air New Zealand Unaccompanied Minor Policy – For flights departing or arriving in Canada, minors under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult passenger who is at least 16 years old. This service, called the Airband Service, is available on Air New Zealand flights. When traveling alone, minors under the age of 12 are required to use the Airband Service. Whereas children aged 12–16 can opt-out if they so prefer.

The Unaccompanied Minor Form, which must be filled out by you. The parent or legal guardian, before your child may be checked in. Must specify who will be responsible for dropping off and picking up your child at the airports of departure and arrival.

At the airport, anybody who is picking up or dropping off your child must have a valid photo ID. An individual Unaccompanied Minor Form is necessary for every one-way trip. Kids Traveling Alone Age Criteria

When flying with Air New Zealand, what is the minimum age requirement for unaccompanied minors?

  • Any child under the age of five must be accompanied by an adult passenger who is at least fifteen years old, or sixteen years old for flights to or from Canada.
  • On some routes, children under the age of 11 who are not accompanied by an adult are required to apply for the Airband Service.
  • At the request of their parent or guardian, children aged 12–16 can travel alone or make use of the Airband Service.

If more than one child is going on an independent trip:

Unaccompanied Minors are children under the age of 12 who are not traveling with an adult. This information must be provided when making a reservation. As per Air New Zealand Airlines Unaccompanied Minor Policy.

  • Anyone above the age of 15 can travel with a child under the age of 2 and a child under the age of 12.
  • If a youngster under the age of eight is considered an Unaccompanied Minor. A passenger over the age of twelve can travel with them.

Service Fee for Unaccompanied Minors

There is a service fee (Airband Service fee) for unaccompanied minors on top of the regular adult fare. Here is the one-way service price for each Unaccompanied Minor:

  • NZD30 for domestic flights (or NZD45 for airport-booked)
  • NZD80 for foreign flights (or NZD120 for airport-booked)

Refunds for Unaccompanied Minors

You can get your money back for the service fee and the ticket price. If you bought a fully refundable child’s fare. In any other case, the type of fare you bought for your child will determine. If a cancellation fee is applicable.

Age Range of Minors Traveling Alone

Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult on all flights operated by Air New Zealand. Unaccompanied minors are not to be connected for longer than:

Note (Air New Zealand Unaccompanied Minor Policy)

  • First, as indicated, you, the parent or legal guardian, are required to greet the Unaccompanied Minor upon arrival. If necessary, the parent or guardian can check the unaccompanied minors up to the intermediary point. Then collect them and send them on to the next airplanes. You are asked to stay at the airport until the plane takes off. You will have to take care of the unaccompanied minor if the flight gets canceled or is delayed.
  • When connecting domestic flights are allowed, the maximum time is 2 hours. When connecting flights include an overseas sector, the maximum time is 3 hours.
  • The flights advertised and operated by Air New Zealand are the only ones covered by the chart mentioned earlier.
  • Services connecting New Zealand to Australia, Fiji, the Cook Islands, Samoa, Tonga, and Norfolk Island are part of Tasman and Pacific flights. Which are governed by the same fare regulations as adult fares.
  • Australia, New Zealand, American Samoa, Cook Islands, French Polynesia, Fiji, Kiribati, New Caledonia, Niue, Papua New Guinea, Nauru, Futuna Islands, Wallis, Tuvalu, Tonga, the Solomon Islands, and Samoa are all countries that make up the South West Pacific routes.
  • If a parent or guardian cannot be present at the airports where the Air New Zealand flight arrives and departs. The airline will not accept unaccompanied minors as passengers. In order for the parent or guardian to be able to check in for the following flight, the unaccompanied minor must be checked in (for flights inside New Zealand only) and then given over. At least one parent or legal guardian is required to stay at the connecting airport until takeoff. In the event of a flight delay or cancellation, the responsibility of caring for an unaccompanied minor must be assumed by the parent or guardian.
  • Please note that unaccompanied minors need to undergo additional check-in processes, so please allow an extra 30 minutes. With this plan in place, we can guarantee that everything will be ready for the bag drop and check-in date. In addition to their e-ticket, the Unaccompanied Minor is required to have acceptable proof of identity (e.g., a passport or visa for foreign travel). Traveling without checked baggage does not exempt unaccompanied minors from completing all additional check-in procedures.

The Function of Airband (Air New Zealand Unaccompanied Minor Policy)

At the check-in counter, the Unaccompanied Minor will be given a unique wristband, called an Airband. At specific points along the way, a member of staff will scan the Airband to send updates to up to five designated drop-offs. And pick-up contacts that the parent or guardian has provided. Except for travel from Niue, these messages will be sent:

  • Following airport check-in, in order to verify enrollment
  • As passengers board the plane
  • Upon landing down
  • Following the transfer of the Unaccompanied Minor to the Ground Staff
  • Upon the designated nominee’s pickup of the Unaccompanied Minor

Pickup and drop off

  • Your child’s proper travel documents, including the Unaccompanied Minor Form (and, if traveling abroad, a passport and visa), as well as your photo ID, should be presented at a Special Assistance counter.
  • Give yourself 30 more minutes to finish the check-in process.
  • Before issuing an Airband, a member of staff will verify your child’s identity, travel documents, and contact information.

Please remember to have hard copies of your child’s vaccination records, pre-departure test results, and any other relevant travel documents on hand.

  • At some airports, you may be able to accompany your child to the departure gate. While at others, a member of staff will accompany your child through security. And then turn them over to the cabin crew. Until the plane takes off, you or the adult who is taking your child to the airport are required to wait there.

While in the air (Air New Zealand Unaccompanied Minor Policy)

  • To make sure they are easily supervised, the cabin crew will place your child’s seat near their work areas.
  • For any Unaccompanied Minor, the flight attendant will activate the parental lock on their device.
  • Once the plane lands down, a member of the crew will accompany your child as they go through the arrivals procedure, and assist with baggage claim. And then deliver them to the individual you’ve chosen (after verifying their identification).

Disruptions and delays in flight

Your child’s flight may be rescheduled or delayed, in which case:

When a youngster:

  • Must have a seat+bag booking if traveling around New Zealand.
  • Must be booked on the worker’s fare if flying trans-Tasman or Pacific Island flights.
