Japan Airlines Unaccompanied Minor Policy – The Unaccompanied Minors Policy of Japan Airlines applies to children between the ages of 5 and 11 who are traveling alone on international or domestic flights. Assistance is provided to Unaccompanied Minors both at the airport and on board.

Japan Airlines Age Restrictions for Unaccompanied Minor Policy

  • On international flights, children between the ages of 5 and 11 are permitted to travel alone but only after booking the Unaccompanied Minor service. Reservations can be made by phone or by visiting a JAL Office, but they cannot be made online.
  • The United Airlines Minor program (known as JAL Smiles Support Service) is a program that provides support for children between the ages of 6 and 11 years old.

Japan Airlines Unaccompanied Minor Reservations Policy

Unaccompanied Minors must be reserved by phoning the JAL Reservation Centre or the city/country office in your nation. When booking a reservation, you must include the parent/adult legal guardian’s contact information at the departure and arrival airports as well as any connecting locations.

Japan Airlines Minor Unaccompanied Fares

Unaccompanied Minors cannot claim child fares. The adult fare (Standard, Saver, etc.) will apply.

Uniformed Minor Japan Airlines Documentation

A signed Declaration Form must be presented at check-in for international flights by the parent/adult legal guardian. It is also known as the Letter of Consent, Handling Advice, and Unaccompanied Minor Form.

Departure Day (International)

Unaccompanied Minor’s parent or adult legal guardian must: during travel

  • Accompany the child to the airport.
  • Sign and provide the Declaration Form during check-in. A person who will: Name, address, and phone numbers are on the form.
    • Accompany the child to the airport.Meeting the child at a stopover.
    • Upon arrival at the airport, receive the child.
  • Giving the child/Unaccompanied Minor to JAL staff.

Note

  • Connecting flights have several restrictions.
  • A parent or guardian must accompany children under the age of 5 years.

Family Service JAL

Japan Airlines Flex Family Service is a special service provided to children between the ages of 12 and 1 who are traveling abroad or returning from a vacation. Service is available at departure and arrival airports, on-board, and during transfer.

Important Note. Arriving at certain airports will not allow JAL Family Service: San Francisco International Airport HK International Airport Dalian International Airport Guangzhou Baiyun

Services include:

  • Checking in and boarding is a service provided by the departure airport.
  • Japan flight service to make your voyage more convenient, such as diapers, BABY BABY CRUISE SE COMPRENT BY FOOD FOR CHILDREN UNDER 2 YEARS OF AGE, AND CHILDREN OVER 2 YEARS OF AGE.
  • Arrival assistance from plane to lobby.
  • JAL/codeshare is a transfer service for connecting flights.

Eligibility Conditions

The Japan Airlines Family Service covers:

  • Fare types: F/A/Z/J/C/D/X/I/U/W/Y. For passengers traveling between November 16, 2020, and April 30, 2022, all booking classes are included. Discounted and Individual Inclusive Tour Fares are excluded.
  • If they’re traveling on Business or First Class Tickets, passengers can make use of the Family Service.
  • The Family Service is available to these passengers:
    • A spouse travelling alone on a journeyA spouse traveling with a child under 1-year-oldA child between 12 and under 1 year oldA family member is 6 years old.
    • Under-16s and adults, if the number of children exceeds the number of adults

Note. The Family Service is not available for flights operated by partner airlines.

How to Submit an Application for Family Service

  • CALL JAL INTERNATIONAL RESERVATIONS OR THE JAL OFFICE IN YOUR CITY/COUNTRY FOR A RESERVATION 2 DAYS BEFORE DEPARTURE.
  • The following important information is needed of you:
    • Purpose of Travel (Overseas Transfer/Visiting a Family Member, etc.)
    • Family member, relationship, and company Name
    • Residential/office phone numbers
    • Number of children you’re traveling with, name of a child, and age
  • You’ll get a Family Service Sticker at check-in.

Note: If you’re traveling during peak season (March 20–April 10, July 20–August 31), you must call JAL International Reservations at least 7 days in advance.

Unaccompanied Minors on Domestic Flights—JAL Smile Support Service

The JAL Smile Support Service is a program for children traveling alone on domestic flights in Japan as per Japan Airlines Unaccompanied Minor Policy. It is a requirement for children between the ages of 6 and 7 years old, although it is an option for children up to age 11.

Reservations

Call Special Assistance at +1-866-414-1886 to request a service for Children Travelling Alone after booking online or by phone. Calling from Japan is toll-free.

Note: You cannot book tickets for children under the age of 7 on the line. Contact the Special Assistance Desk.

Complete the Japan Airlines Unaccompanied Minor Form

The Request Form for a Child Travelling Alone must be downloaded, printed, filled out, and submitted at the check-in counter. Although you can fill out the form at the airport, doing so in advance will save you time.

Round Trips

Two forms are needed for round trips, one per leg. If the itinerary contains connecting flights, notify the check-in counter agent or put the number in the Remarks.

For Your Child, Pick a Seat

After booking, you can choose a seat 20 minutes before departure. Children under 18 cannot sit in exit-row seats for safety reasons.

Check-in

Your child must be checked in at a JAL Smile Support Counter 30 minutes before departure.

  • During check-in, the child’s parent or guardian must be present.
  • A signed Consent Form for Children Travelling Alone is required for children between the ages of 6 and 7 years old.
  • Uniformed Minors cannot utilize automated check-in kiosks.
  • If your child is traveling during busy seasons (summer, winter, and holidays), make sure to arrive at the airport early due to excessive traffic.
